Don’t Bet the Farm on Grant Balfour

by Alex Welch on March 21, 2012

How long will Grant Balfour’s closing duties last?

The Oakland A’s have finally made a decision on who will replace Andrew Bailey as the anchor of the bullpen this upcoming season. Bob Melvin announced that Balfour will be his closer to start 2012. The job has hardly been won yet, and you shouldn’t be entirely confident that Balfour will be in this position the entire season.

Brian Fuentes was in the running all along, and some sources actually tweeted the A’s were leaning towards him winning this position before the decision came in. However, Fuentes isn’t the only competition gunning for the ninth inning duties in Oakland.

Fautino De Los Santos is a young(er) guy who could easily step in if things go awry for Balfour. With three pitchers vying for save opportunities, it’s hard to imagine Balfour will make it the entire year in the same spot, especially given his recent history.

In 2011 Balfour blew five saves in the seven save opportunities he had. That doesn’t exactly look good on your resume going forward. Balfour was excellent when it came to holds, recording 26 for the A’s last season. But something about that late-game pressure brought the worst of him. It’s not to say he won’t be  successful as a closer this season, but there is reason for concern.

The Peyton Manning Fantasy Football Fallout

by Zak Griffith on March 21, 2012

Well, the wait is finally over. Former Colts signal caller and future Hall-of-Fame quarterback Peyton Manning signed with the Denver Tebow’s, errr…Broncos Tuesday. Is it too soon for Tim Tebow jokes?

Either way, Tebow will likely be traded and Manning will assume the starting position. So what does this do to Manning’s fantasy value? How well will he produce in 2012 with the likes of Eric Decker, Demaryius Thomas and Willis McGahee at his disposal?

My guess is just fine.

Some people make the argument that Manning lacks weapons in Denver and may not be the Manning he was in Indy when he had Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark, among others. Sure, Decker and Thomas had VERY average seasons last year as far as fantasy points. Decker had 612 receiving yards and Thomas was right behind him with 551. Neither broke the 10 receiving touchdowns plateau, and both averaged less than 55 yards per game. But how can you judge their talent when their previous quarterback was completing 47 percent of his passes? The Broncos were a run-first offense last year because they had a run-first quarterback. Those days are long gone.

An early look at Peyton Manning’s 2012 fantasy value

March 1, 2012

Does Peyton Manning still have top five fantasy value in a different system if healthy? Remember the older Manning? Fantasy QBs in 2012: Boom or bust (Part II)

February 28, 2012

In 2011, you were either a believer or a doubter when it came to Michael Vick. Me, yeah — I was on the believer side. Swing and a miss. Vick’s size leaves his vulnerable to injuries, in and out of the pocket (seriously, the notion he’s a run-first quarterback so therefore he’s prone to injuries [...]

The one thing that should strike you when looking over the fantasy outfielders is the fact that they make up such an important part of your fantasy baseball draft strategy, or at least they should. The Flacco vs. Ryan debate rages on

February 20, 2012

It’s been a debated question in both Baltimore and Atlanta: Who’s better — Joe Flacco or Matt Ryan? From a football perspective it’s hard to argue against Flacco’s 44 wins in his first four seasons, five playoff wins and an outstanding performance in this past season’s AFC Championship where he essentially led his team to [...]

2012 Fantasy Baseball 3B Rankings

February 20, 2012

The third base position used to belong to big boppers, the land of the longball launchers. Alliteration aside (and don’t use either of those phrases for fantasy team names), there were some changes to the attributes of a fantasy third baseman last year. All but three of the top 10 fantasy third basemen last season [...]

3 Fantasy Baseball Impact Rookies: Catcher

February 17, 2012

Rookies are always a hot topic in fantasy baseball and this year it’s no different. And while it’s always a gamble because you never know just how the young player will react to big-league action, it’s doubly intensified when a rookie is a catcher and has so much responsibility outside his own hitting. Catchers have [...]
